Samer Khalil becomes 4th FUMA Swimmer this Year to Commit to Swim in College

Fork Union, VA – Senior Samer Khalil of the Fork Union Military Academy swimming and diving program signed a National Letter of Intent to join the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, Friday afternoon.  For the full story visit the following link.

Fork Union Wins Two State Championships En Route to a 4th Place Finish at the VISAA State Championship Meet

Fork Union Swimming and Diving finished the High School season with a fourth place finish at the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association State Championship meet held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg, VA.  In total the team posted two event wins, four runner ups, and 5 more top 8 finishes.  Those top 8 finishes are as follows:

  • 200 Medley Relay:  6th (Smith, Youssef, Warren, Gustafson) 1:43.18
  • 200 Free:  Pitts 2nd (1:44.27)
  • 200 IM:  Youssef 7th (2:01.96)
  • 50 FR:  Gemma 1st (21.23) 
  • 100 Fly:  Khalil 1st (51.63) 
  • Diving:  Fowler 15th
  • 100 FR:  Gemma 2nd (46.29), Pitts 5th
  • 500 FR:  Khalil 4th (4:52.53) 
  • 200 Free Relay: 2nd (Pitts, Gemma, Youssef, Khalil)  1:25.96
  • 100 Breast: Youssef 5th (1:00.19) 
  • 400 Free Relay: 2nd (Gemma, Warren, Khalil, Pitts)  3:13.70
In addition to these top 8 finishes the team managed to post a total of 23 Personal Best times, 1 New School Record, 3 New NCSA JR National cuts, and 2 All America Consideration Times which lead to a 4th place team finish behind St. Christopher, Trinity Episcopal, and St. Stephens & St. Agnes.  "The team had an incredible meet," says Coach Campbell. "They showed up in every event and swam as a team and as a result they posted some incredible times, I am proud of them to say the least!"

This meet concludes the High School portion of the swim season, however Fork Union Swimming's season will still go on for a few weeks as several swimmer have qualified to swim at follow on meets such as Virginia Senior Championships, NCSA's, and Sectionals.

Fork Union Finishes the High School Regular Season at the Virginia Prep League Meet

Fork Union Swimming and Diving finished the regular High School season swimming schedule with a third place finish at the Virginia Prep League meet this past weekend in Richmond, VA.  The team posted quite a few top 16 performances as well as many personal bests and in season top times.  Those finishes are as follows:

  • 200 Medley Relay:  7th - A Relay 
  • 200 Free:  Pitts 3rd (1:48.61), Khalil 5th & Leydig 16th 
  • 200 IM:  Youssef 3rd (2:03.08), Smith 11th, Hughes 12th & Greenspon 15th
  • 50 FR:  Gemma 2nd (21.82), Warren 13th, Gustafson 15th & Ebright 16th
  • 100 Fly:  Khalil 1st (52.93) & Pitts 6th 
  • Diving:  Fowler 13th  & Lewis 14th
  • 100 FR:  Gemma 2nd (47.74), Warren 12th & Gustafson 15th
  • 500 FR:  Hughes 8th (5:25.26), Smith 9th,  Leydig 11th & Khalil 15th
  • 200 Free Relay:  3rd  –  A Relay (1:28.80)
  • 100 Breast: Youssef 2nd (1:01.77) & Greenspon 11th 
  • 400 Free Relay:  3rd  - A Relay (3:15.29)
This finish is higher than the team's fifth place finish at this meet just one year ago and comes on the end of a month where the team posted a 10-2 dual meet record and a first place finish at the FUMA January Invitational. "I am happy with where the team is at as we head into championship season," says Coach Campbell. "We have qualified a total of 15 for the VISAA state meet and we have several that have either qualified for Sectionals, NCSA's or Senior Champs.  I am looking forward to seeing how they do in the coming weeks as they start into their taper!"

Fork Union Swimming & Diving will next compete at the VISAA State Swimming & Diving Championships which is to be held 17-18 February at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg, VA. 

Fork Union has Successful Meet at the 55th Annual PITT Christmas Invite

Just prior to the Christmas Break, Fork Union Swimming attended the 55th Annual PITT Christmas Invite at the University of Pittsburgh. Nine swimmers qualified for the meet with a total of seven that ended up attending.  During the meet, the team posted two event wins, four runner up finishes, three more top 8 finishes, 8 school records, 2 meet records, and 24 personal bests.  To add to this, the team finished 10th overall for the male side out of over45 teams competing and despite being one of the smallest teams and only entering swimmers in two of the five scoring age groups.  Here are a list of top performances by event:

FUMA Swimming Breaks 7 Pool Records & Qualifies 8 for State at Home Opener

Fork Union, VA - Fork Union Swimming and Diving hosted the Fork Union Christmas Invitational at the Fork Union Aquatic Center on December 10, 2016.  This meet served as the team's first official high school meet where they could qualify for the VISAA State Championship meet and included teams from around the local area.  While not at full strength, the team had a great showing winning 8 out of the 11 events on the day, setting 7 new pool records (bringing the mark to 9 on the year), and qualifying a total of eight swimmers for the VISAA State Championship meet which will be held in February at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg, VA.

Here are the winning and pool record performances by Fork Union (please note all times are in Short Course Meters):

200 Medley Relay:  Fork Union (1st Overall - 1:52.11)
200 Free:  David Pitts, Fork Union (1st Overall - 2:03.80), Tamas Novoszath, Fork Union (exhibition - 1:50.01 - pool record)
200 IM:  Mazen Youssef, Fork Union (1st Overall - 2:13.67)
50 Free:  Anthony Gemma, Fork Union (1st Overall - 24.99)
100 Fly: Samer Khalil, Fork Union (1st Overall - 57.93 - pool record)
100 Free: David Pitts, Fork Union (2nd Overall - 55.09)
400 Free: Samer Khalil, Fork Union (1st Overall - 4:29.21), Tamas Novoszath, Fork Union (exhibition - 3:54.37 - pool record)

*Novoszath also broke the pool record in the 50 Free (23.66) as the leadoff of the 200 Free Relay and in the 100 Free (50.45) as the leadoff of the 400 Free Relay. For a full updated list of pool records, click here.

In the process, the following Fork Union swimmers qualified for the VISAA State Championship meet: Anthony Gemma, Luke Gustafson, John Hughes, Ahmed Khalil, Samer Khalil, David Pitts, Nathan Smith, & Mazen Youssef. 

Even with all of these performances, the team was not able to keep pace with a much larger Albemarle team and ended up placing second at the meet. The final team scores were:

Fork Union's Tamas Novoszath has Record Breaking Performance at AT&T Winter Nationals

Fork Union Swimming's Tamas Novoszath competed this past week at the AT&T Winter National meet held at the McCauley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Georgia.  This meet is USA Swimming's premier short course national championship meet and attracts some of the fastest swimmers in the United States.  Novoszath, a distance freestyler from Hungary, swam in the 500 Freestyle, 200 Freestyle, and 1650 Freestyle over the four day competition.  

Novoszath rose to the occasion, dropping four seconds off his personal best and posting the 11th fastest time (4:23.32) at the meet in the 500 Free, dropping two seconds and posting the 9th fastest time (1:37.47) at the meet in the 200 Free, and posting the 20th fastest time (15:30.32) at the meet in the 1650 Free. All of these swims were fast enough to earn him spots in the evening finals and were new school records.  

This has been a very successful season for Novoszath, as he now owns six out of the nine school records that have been broken this year.  Fork Union Swimming will be back in action for the Fork Union Christmas Invitational on 10 December and then will travel to the University of Pittsburgh on 15-18 December for the PITT Christmas Invitational.

B Final, 200 Free - Novoszath wins to place 9th overall in a time of 1:37.59 (Note prelims was a 1:37.47 - a personal best and school record).


C Final, 500 Free - Novoszath wins to place 17th overall (his time was 11th fastest at the meet) in a school record and personal best time of 4:23.32.



FUMA Swimmer Selected to Join Egyptian National Team

FORK UNION, Va. – Fork Union Military Academy’s Tarek Aboelthana has been selected to join the Egyptian National Swimming Team, the Egyptian Swimming Federation announced Wednesday.  Aboelthana, a breaststroke specialist, is a postgraduate student at Fork Union, who recently signed with Oakland University last month.  For the full story click here.  (11/30/2016)

Five Blue Devils Sign National Letters of Intent in Early Signing Period at Fork Union Military Academy

Swimmers Tamas Novoszath and Tarek Aboelthana, baseball’s Jacob Grabeel, PG basketball’s LeAndre Thomas and PG football’s Silas Dzansi signed National Letters of Intent Tuesday afternoon on the campus of Fork Union Military Academy.
